Area 51: What Are They Hiding?
Very few subjects can raise the attention of both UFO conspiracy theorists and aviation enthusiasts alike like Area 51. The site, which is at this point admittedly operated by The United States Air Force, is located in the Nevada (U.S.) desert and contains the dried out bed of Groom Lake, but more importantly contains runways, hangers, and all the other components of an operational airbase. One of the reasons for the site’s involvement is so many conspiracy theories is the shroud of secrecy kept around it; a shroud that includes the government denying it’s mere existence up until 2003, and reportedly led to it being the only spot in the world that the members of the Skylab space project were not allowed to photograph. The truth about Area 51 has become so mixed in with speculation, that at this point no one really knows what’s true or false. All that’s really known is that aircraft of unknown origin have been seen entering and leaving the facility on numerous occasions.
The main theories about the site are that it’s a test facility to experimental aircraft (a fact), it’s some sort of UFO research and experimenting facility (who knows), and that there’s a water slide (I made that up).
Area 51 is known by most aviation experts as the site where planes like the SR-71 Blackbird, F-117, Tacit Blue, Brilliant Buzzard, F-22, X-33, and SwitchBlade were developed. The facility is also believed to be where the Suntan (liquid hydrogen powered craft), Black Manta (super stealth aircraft), and the Aurora (Mach 6 to Mach 20 in seconds) were all developed, but no one can actually prove they exist.
To the popular culture and conspiracy sects, Area 51 is believed to be where the wreckage from the Roswell UFO crash was taken. From there, it’s believed scientist studied the aliens that died in the crash, and worked with those who survived to reverse engineer much of the technology we use today. The site also believed to be some sort of meeting place where earthlings and aliens conference.
So who really knows what goes on at Area 51? We surely don’t, but it’s probably just what we said: a mixture of fact and theory. So until the government declassifies what the site really is, Area 51 will remain…an Other World Mystery.
